Our blood pH level needs to be maintained between 7.35 and 7.45, slightly alkaline. A lot of work has to be done for our bodies to stay balanced within this range. The more acidic the diet we consume, the more we thwart our body’s efforts. In the process, we leave our bodies feeling tired and our immune systems too weak and vulnerable to disease. Blood pH helps measure the acidity or alkalinity of the blood and balance blood pH level.
In general, stomach acid has a pH figure close to 0 (very much acidic), while bleach has a pH almost 14 (the most alkaline). On the other hand, pure water remains squarely in the middle with a neutral pH of 7. However, the body requires a blood level slightly more alkaline that 7 (possibly between 7.35 and 7.45). To help the body stay within this blood pH level, we eat a more alkaline diet containing fewer acidic foods. Unfortunately, the Standard American Diet allegedly contains more acidic foods than the alkaline foods it should, and this is extremely off-balance. In trying to bring pH back into balance, it places constant stress on the body, including the immune system. But by eating an alkaline diet, we help the blood pH stay in balance without putting in too much effort.
While eating an alkaline diet may help the blood pH level to remain in balance without too much effort, it does not mean acidic foods should not be part of our diet. This simply means that we should shift the balance from the traditional acidic diet to more alkaline diets. An alkaline diet plays a major role in optimizing vitality since it keeps the body tissues supple and reduces inflammation, a major culprit in many disease processes such as arthritis, irritable bowel disorders, fibromyalgia, and sometimes cancer. Moreover, alkalizing the body also builds and strengthens our bones, thus reducing the incidence or occurrence of osteoporosis.
As part of reducing inflammation or a detoxification plan, you should monitor alkaline-acid and eat more foods that support alkalinity. Other benefits of alkaline foods include increased mental clarity, energy, reduced muscle pain and joint stiffness. In addition, the body will function better when the pH level is slightly alkaline. This is because many bodily processes, such as digestion, will produce acidic residues. The pH level is always in flux: the acid that is constantly produced is subsequently neutralized. This is because the acids produced require neutralization (sometimes referred to as alkalization). As a result, diets and supplements are the two major ways to reduce this acid load.
Some common types of alkaline foods are fruits and vegetables, especially leafy vegetables which are alkaline-forming in the body. Other alkaline-forming foods include root vegetables, including radishes (especially black red or white), as well as carrots, beets, horseradish, turnips, and rutabaga; leafy greens including turnip greens, spinach, kale, and Swiss chard; and cruciferous such as cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, and Brussels sprouts. Others include lemon, cucumber, garlic, millet, and apples. An imbalance in the pH level can cause health problems. However, acidosis (over-acidity) is more common that alkalosis (over-alkalinity).
